Wilma
and Milton Lewis
Anyone who has lived in the St Paris (Graham) area is familiar with Wilma and e Milt, whether it is through school,
work, sports or church!
Wilma and Milton live in the same
house he was born in, the son of Jay and Pearl Ruby Lewis. When Milton was born, Annabelle sat on the front
step and announced to passersby, “I have a baby brother” in 1935. (Milton also had a sister Judy, who is deceased).
Wilma and Milton have both stayed close to the area in their lives. They both attended Johnson St. Paris
School, and Milton played baseball, basketball, and threw shot put. Wilma graduated from Graham.
He thought at first he would like to be a doctor, but he took Latin, but it took him and he preferred any subject but
that. Growing up, teachers had a big influence on his life, including Coach Labuda, Miss McBeth, and Ruth
Peirson. Milt had a lot of respect for Coach Labuda, and decided if he couldn’t become a doctor,
and Coach Labuda was a teacher, maybe he should become a teacher also. He visited Wilmington College with
Don Eaton and ran into John Murray, who was a student, and an opponent in high school sports. John said they needed baseball
players, and thought Milt would fit right in. Milton worked at Johnson Manufacturing as an apprentice sheet metal worker during
the summer, talked again to Coach Labuda and headed off to Wilmington in January 1954, majoring in business, economics, social
studies, health, and phys ed. He played baseball, golf, and then football his senior year.
Milt graduated in 1959, along with Fonda Lou Eaton and they celebrated their 50th year graduation from Wilmington College
this year..
His first job led Milt back to his own school, teaching 7th &
8th grade world geography and Ohio history, and phys ed at Graham Junior High, and coaching basketball, football
and track. He signed his contract at the Graham Local Schools superintendent’s breakfast table.
And as he stepped into the office, there was Miss Sloan, secretary. He asked her if he could save her life, and handed
her a lifesaver. Next time, he asked her out on a date, and they were married in 1963.
Milt continued coaching, moving to freshmen, reserves and varsity. In fall of 1967-68 OWE started,
and because of time constraints, only coached golf, and did some basketball and football scouting. Wilma
continued as secretary for 20 years.
Milt
sang in a quartet in college, and Marion Ward asked him if he would like to sing in a local chorus, The
Miami Shelby Melody Men, and he sang for quite a few years and is still a member . He considered
a job that would take him away from St. Paris, but when the kids asked, “do you mean we would have to leave Graham?”
That question made up his mind, “no, we are not leaving.” Milt is also a member of the
Masonic Lodge, K of P, and Lion’s Club.
Wilma and Milt’s family include: Melissa and Bob Moody, grandkids Jake, twins,
Kasey and Kylee. Jay and Jenny Lewis, grandkids Megan and Josh. Amy and Mike Neer, and
grandson, Nathan.
Congratulations
to Wilma and Milt Lewis, they have touched a lot of lives!

The parade starts at Graham Administration Offices at 370 E Main St, to south on Jefferson and dispense at Harmon Park.

Where to line up? Antique tractors
on Bowersock, horses and carriages should be dropped off and loaded at the Middle School (please remember to keep it clean
behind your horse).
The Basket and Dessert Auction is
a fun time to raise money for Pony Wagon Days. We welcome any and all donations. If
you would like to make, bake, or buy, bring it on down! We would love to see you!
Pony Wagon Days is selling $1 raffle
tickets for a side of beef and ½ a hog. What a bargain to fill your freezer! Winner
pays processing. See any Pony Wagon Days member or Uptown Hair Designs.
Flea market will again be at the Pony Wagon Museum
on Saturday. Set up starts at 8:00 and cost is $10, payable at that time.
Johnson St Paris Fire Department is celebrating their
125th Anniversary! On Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 1:00, there will be a parade beginning
at Graham Middle School. The parade route will follow Main St. through St Paris. Over
200 fire departments have been invited. An open house will follow at the Johnson St Paris Fire Department.

The Pony Wagon Days Committe is open to anyone and everyone. The meetings are usually held
on the 4th Thursday of the month at the St. Paris Municipal Building at 7:30 pm. We can always use input, ideas,
and more people.
For the past several years we have seen a decline in help, money, and
attendance at Pony Wagon Days. A sign of the times? Perhaps, people are busy with jobs, families and activities.
This is not just Pony Wagon Days problem, many organizations are affected by this. Of course, the economy and the price
of gas this year does not help.
This year, we will be asking for sponsors for
all of our expense items, including but not limited to:
$200 area marching bands
$125 Pony Wagon Days Princess and
Queen Contest
$100 Home Show
$1000 Talent Show
$300 Grand Marshall
$30 per hour for generator (runs
for over 64 hours nonstop)
$100 Participation Ribbons for parade basket auction and car show
$50 per hole (18) for
Pony Wagon Days Golf Tournament
$800 Second Nature, Saturday night classic rock band from local and Springfield
area
$500 stage
$90 necessary rooms
We can use donations of any type that we can auction at the Annual
Basket Auction on Thursday night. Theme baskets work well, but we will accept pies, cakes, desserts, quilts, handcrafted
items, gift certificates, or we can put a basket together for you.
If you would like to sponsor any of these
expenses, please contact Sally Burnside, Treasurer, at 937-857-9232, or any Pony Wagon Days member or
ponywagondays@yahoo.com
